Heat stress in workers: Protective measures in hot weather

Working outdoors during periods of high temperatures poses significant risks to the health and safety of workers. Prolonged exposure to the sun, ultraviolet (UV) radiation, intense glare, and heat stress can cause fatigue, dehydration, reduced concentration, and an increased risk of accidents.

The proper selection of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is a key factor in prevention. Safety glasses with UV filters help protect the eyes from solar radiation and reduce glare, improving visibility and safety during work. At the same time, ventilated safety helmets help reduce heat and humidity, providing greater comfort for the user. The use of light-colored helmets, protective neck shades, and cooling sweatbands can also significantly reduce heat stress.

Equally important is the protection of the skin from ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Workers should use high-SPF sunscreen and wear appropriate clothing that covers the body, reducing exposure to UV rays and the risk of burns or more serious skin conditions.

In addition, it is essential to implement proper work practices, such as taking regular breaks in shaded areas and ensuring continuous access to cool drinking water. For tasks that require respiratory protection, loose-fitting powered air-purifying respirators can provide greater comfort in hot conditions.

With proper planning, suitable equipment, and worker awareness, outdoor work can be carried out more safely and comfortably even during periods of extreme heat.
